The 2019 Annual EggTrack Report has arrived, and it’s bigger and better than ever before!

EggTrack is a unique tool for progress and transparency, specifically designed to ensure major food companies can and will stick to their 100% cage-free egg commitments. By tracking progress, EggTrack identifies leaders and laggards in the marketplace and offers technical resources and assistance from Compassion’s Food Business team to aid in companies’ transitions.

Caging hens for the purpose of egg production is widely regarded as one of the worst-of-the-worst factory farming practices. Fortunately, companies and consumers alike are driving the market to shift to 100% cage-free eggs. Through EggTrack we will achieve a cage-free future, together.

The newly updated EggTrack is now available as an interactive website, in addition to a downloadable PDF version.

Here are just a few highlights from this year’s report:

  • There’s more transparency in 2019 than any previous year, with 51 of the 128 companies (40%) included having reported or updated progress on their cage-free commitments—a major increase from last year’s 27 out of 100 (27%)!
  • The breadth of companies covered in this year’s EggTrack report represents approximately 79% of the projected future cage-free egg market. Remarkably, McDonald’s and Walmart both reported cage-free egg progress for the first time; the two of which combined have a footprint of 15.1 billion eggs per year, affecting 52.2 million laying hens.
  • According to the USDA, so far in 2019 the US cage-free laying hen flock has grown to 20.5% of the US laying- hen flock overall. While this indicates major and meaningful progress for animals, we still have a long way to go to completely close the door on cruel cage confinement—and ensuring food businesses achieve their 100% cage-free goals is our most effective tool for doing so.

For a transparent breakdown of leaders and laggards for a cage-free future, a comprehensive welfare review of cage-free systems by our welfare specialist, Dr. Hillary Dalton, and a detailed market analysis for consumers and investors alike, the 2019 EggTrack report is the place to be.
