Today's 'Make America Healthy Again' announcement is a glossy PR exercise that props up the very factory‑farm system making America sick. The administration chose as its poster child a dairy that markets itself as raising animals 'in harmony'—even though a USDA investigation, obtained through FOIA, confirmed multiple violations of organic and animal‑welfare standards at Alexandre Family Farm, and the company has now admitted to serious abuses, including cows dragged with machinery, painful horn‑tipping without pain relief, a teat cut off an animal with mastitis, diesel poured on animals, and animals dying after being left without adequate feed and care.

At the same time, Secretary Rollins praises states as 'laboratories of innovation' while this administration pushes federal pre‑emption bills like the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act and its rebranded twin, the Save Our Bacon Act, which would erase democratically adopted state laws that protect independent, family-scale farms — and allow large factory-farm operators, including foreign-owned agribusinesses, to flood the U.S. market with unsafe cheap meat and drive American family farmers out of business. Analysis from Harvard Law School finds the EATS framework could undermine over a thousand state public‑health, food safety, and welfare protections. It is a blatant federal assault on states' rights that would create a race to the bottom.

At Compassion in World Farming, we want a future where genuinely regenerative, higher‑welfare farming is the norm. But USDA policy still channels billions of dollars to the largest industrial livestock and feed operations, while small and mid‑sized family farms are left to struggle. Government data show that the top 10,000 livestock feeding operations—mostly large, confined animal feeding operations—received over $12 billion in federal assistance from 2018–2023, and that the biggest 10% of producers take nearly 80% of farm subsidies, while most small farms receive no support at all.

If this administration were serious about making America healthy, it would stop regen-washing factory farms, stop trying to strip states and communities of their right to demand better, and finally redirect public money away from intensive, industrial animal agriculture toward true regenerative farming that protects animals, people, and rural communities. Instead, this $700 million package doubles down on the status quo—and that's not health, it's spin.
