Bringing together an impressive group of experts, a new book Cultivated Meat to Secure Our Future: Hope for Animals, Food Security, and the Environment, co-edited by two of Europe’s most influential animal activists, Michel Vandensbosch and global CEO of Compassion in World Farming Philip Lymbery is a readable and visionary book that answers the hugely important question: can cultivated meat – from stem-cells grown in a bioreactor – help us win the battle against climate change, extinction, and ill-health?

This book informs, inspires, and opens debates about cultivated meat which could be a game-changer in reducing animal suffering and helping solve the growing crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and the rise of ill-health of which our food system is a major contributor.

With a backdrop of the hottest recorded temperatures on Earth, record-breaking wildfires, devastating floods, loss of biodiversity, nitrogen pollution and more besides, if you’re not worried then you’re not paying attention.

Yet, it is within our power using better practices, science and technology to create lasting systemic change, not least through the breakthrough promised by cultivated meat – real meat but not from a slaughtered animal.

Cultivated meat offers the promise of helping to transform our food system to one that is healthier, more humane and sustainable.

The book includes a collection of chapters by highly respected experts who provide well-informed and well-reasoned insight from different points of view. Internationally respected contributors include Chase Purdy, author of Billion Dollar Burger; celebrated health author, Dr. Michael Greger, and journalist and philosopher, Julian Baggini.

This new book is essential reading for those seeking solutions to how we are eating our way to extinction and taking the planet with us.

Philip Lymbery, Global CEO of Compassion in World Farming, and visiting Professor of Winchester University said, “There is a growing urgency for humanity to find a new relationship with meat. We need world governments to urgently ensure that investment of public money moves away from supporting of factory-farmed meat from animals kept in conditions of utter deprivation. Instead, we need to see support alternative non-animal sources of protein such as cultivated meat from stem-cells grown in a bioreactor.”

Michel Vandenbosch, co-founder and president of GAIA (Global Action in Interest of Animals) said, “This inspiring book sheds new light on the state-of-the-art achievements and challenges of cultivated meat. The future of meat is without any animal suffering. Cultivated meat gives hope for animals, food safety and our natural environment. The contribution it can make to all life on our planet, saving billions of animals, is one of the biggest wins in a changing world.”

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) and UN Messenger of Peace said, “Factory farms cause unacceptable cruelty to sentient animals and major damage to the environment. This book demonstrates that cultivated meat can play an important role in closing them down.”

Peter Singer, Professor of Bioethics, Princeton University said, “Producing meat from animals on the vast scale that is happening now is an environmental disaster and a grave public health risk. Can cultivated meat truly secure our future? Michel Vandenbosch and Philip Lymbery have brought together an impressive group of experts to answer this question.”
