Memorial Day cookouts were once notorious for animal-based foods. However, as more Americans continue to adopt plant-based diets for health, religious, philosophical, or environmental reasons, animal-free dishes are becoming increasingly commonplace at the unofficial summer kickoff.   From appetizers to desserts, we’ve compiled a list of recipes that are easy to make, use simple ingredients, and are packed with flavor. These delectable dishes will keep you munching all celebration long. 

1. Vegan Macaroni Salad

This plant-based take shared by @itdoesnttastelikechicken uses only 10 ingredients and takes only 20 minutes to make. This easy vegan macaroni salad recipe uses sweet gherkins, vegan mayonnaise, and finely chopped veggies for an exceptional dish. 

2. Vegan Popcorn Shrimp

King oyster mushrooms are the star of this popcorn “shrimp” recipe from @lovingitvegan. Pair it with your favorite sauce, and it’s ready for the table!

3. Vegan Black Bean Burger

Another find from @lovingitvegan, this homemade black bean burger is one of the “meatiest” out there. Walnuts and smoked paprika add to its robust flavor, while tomato paste adds moisture. Pair it with your favorite toppings to complete the dish, such as pickles, guacamole, mushrooms, arugula, tomato slices, or vegan cheese, aoli, or dressing. 4. Vegan Sloppy Joe

This plant-powered sloppy joe recipe uses lentils and soy for a protein-packed meal. This recipe also includes instructions for vegan coleslaw to complete the dish!

This unbelievably easy recipe from @veganawesome has only six ingredients. Shredded oyster mushrooms give this dish the classic pulled “pork” texture, and seasonings like paprika and garlic powder add flavor. Pair with coleslaw or caramelized onions and add a bun.

These vegan scalloped potatoes from @that.veganbabe make the perfect side dish to bring to your Memorial Day cookout. Cashews and plant-based milk (almond milk was used in this post, but oat milk can also be used for an even creamier texture) give this dish a smooth, hearty feel.

7. Vegan Red Velvet Cheesecake Bites


How adorable are these red and white cheesecake bites for Memorial Day?! This recipe from @itdoesnttastelikechicken features raw cashews, coconut milk, and vegan butter to create an ultra-creamy texture.

8. Vegan Pecan Pie

This recipe is a vegan rendition of a true American classic—pecan pie! Vegan butter and coconut milk make for a blend of animal-free richness and sweetness. Remember to pick up some vegan whipped cream or ice cream to top it off!

We had to include this last dessert recipe from @plantyou because it is mind-blowingly easy and oh-so-decadent! Combine dark chocolate, pumpkin puree, and arrowroot powder in a blender, put it in the refrigerator, and you're done!
